I've been a photographer for over two decades, and I've used a variety of cameras, from rangefinders to mirrorless digitals. But I never had the courage to try large format photography until I discovered the ObscuraFlex, an innovative add-on for view cameras that lets you skip the film and use a smartphone or compact camera as a digital back. The ObscuraFlex is a game-changer, making large format photography more accessible and less intimidating for beginners. It replaces the camera's original ground glass focus screen with a new one made from a proprietary material that diffuses light more effectively, resulting in a smoother, crisper, and more even exposure. This focus screen is the 'secret sauce' that makes the ObscuraFlex more than just a lightproof box. The device is manufactured from high-quality materials and feels sturdy, with cradles for the iPhone 17 Pro and Ricoh GR IV that attach via light-tight bayonet mounts and are secured with screws. The ObscuraFlex is a great tool for photographers who want to learn to use a large format camera, as well as for experts with years of experience behind a 4-by-5 who simply want to enjoy the convenience of digital. However, it's not without its challenges. Setting up a shot is a more careful and convoluted process than I'm used to with a 35mm or even a medium format camera. The 4-by-5-inch image area is huge, and the tilt movements can capture scenes with a look that 35mm doesn't quite match. The 'secret sauce' focus screen adds something too, giving texture to scenes that you don't get with digital. But the kit is best used in sunlight or brightly lit interiors, as low light can make manual focus challenging. Despite these challenges, I'm glad I finally challenged myself to move beyond medium format, and I suspect that if I keep going with 4-by-5, I may eventually end up with photos that I'm happier with.
